hi, i'm Olivia (she/her)

My name is Olivia Glayzer, although a lot of people know me as Ryott. I am a physics student, software engineer, musician, and general-purpose tinkerer from the Black Hills of South Dakota.

I spend most of my time working somewhere in the overlap between particle astrophysics, scientific instrumentation, embedded systems, open-source software, and community technology.

I also write music, play several instruments, carry radiation detectors into places where normal people would simply enjoy the scenery, and spend entirely too much time configuring Linux.

physics stuff

I am an undergraduate physics student at South Dakota Mines and work with the SuperCDMS Collaboration.

My main interests are particle astrophysics, direct dark-matter detection, low-background experiments, radiation detection, detector instrumentation, cryogenic systems, and scientific computing.

I have worked on detector-support and laboratory-monitoring systems for SuperCDMS SNOLAB, including software for radon monitors, mass-flow controllers, liquid-nitrogen systems, data logging, and assorted pieces of hardware that communicate over old serial protocols for mysterious historical reasons.

I am also developing ideas for open, community-controlled radiation surveys of abandoned mining areas and other potentially contaminated land.

computer stuff

I run Hidden Sector Software LLC, an independent software firm focused on scientific systems, community infrastructure, and practical technology for Indigenous organizations, researchers, and nonprofits.

My work spans Python, Django, PostgreSQL, Linux, embedded systems, instrumentation, laboratory automation, and offline-capable web applications. I care about free software, Indigenous data sovereignty, accessibility, and building systems that communities can actually control and maintain.

My public code lives on GitHub.

music stuff

I am a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter. I make punk, folk-punk, experimental, lo-fi, and occasionally jazz-adjacent noises.

I play guitar, bass, trumpet, and whatever else happens to be nearby. My music usually concerns grief, politics, queerness, survival, alienation, community, and the strange experience of continuing to exist.

Recordings, lyrics, old projects, and other noise can be found on my music page.

current projects

  • SuperCDMS SNOLAB commissioning and instrumentation software
  • Scientific data collection and laboratory automation
  • Community software for Indigenous organizations
  • Open radiation-survey tools and environmental data
  • Writing and recording new music
  • Learning more Lakota and Québec French
  • Making this website increasingly elaborate
